User Query: My Google Tasks contain 6 months of structured tasks (main tasks and sub-items under them). Our company started using Microsoft 365. I want to import Google Tasks to Outlook while preserving their hierarchy. As exporting Google Takeout gives JSON that Outlook can’t read. I tried other methods that worked to convert it into CSV. But they didn’t preserve the structure and merged everything into one comma-separated line.
Summary: Organizations moving from Gmail or Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 need to import their Google Tasks to Outlook without any loss. Google Tasks and Outlook are two separate software applications. So, there is no native option to transfer Google Tasks to Outlook. That’s why, to bridge this gap, the Google Workspace Backup Tool exists and makes this process easier.
It’s the process of transferring your task titles, due dates, and notes from Google Tasks. It should be in a format that Outlook Tasks can read. It’s not an easy process because of inconsistent formats and no preservation of hierarchy. Also, a direct method to add Google Tasks to Outlook doesn’t exist. This becomes problematic for many individuals and organizations to sync and import your Google Tasks to Outlook. For better understanding, consider these situations:
|
Note: This isn’t just about copying a file across source to destination paths. Subtasks and completion status may all need to sync Google Tasks to Outlook correctly. The data either becomes unformatted or it gets lost. For that reason, moving your list should be treated as a small project and done consciously if relying on manual methods. |
Outlook doesn’t contain a built-in tool for this. Instead, users combine a few native paths depending on what their tasks look like.
First, start by exporting your tasks and converting them into a CSV.
|
Downloadable ZIP format is preferred. |
|
After extracting it, access the JSON file containing Google Tasks organized by list. |
|
If this stage needs additional support, then check our full guide to export Google Workspace data to CSV. Also, remember manual conversion can break the structure. You have to manually restructure it |
Import the converted file into Outlook that was converted into CSV above.

This process doesn’t work on the newer Outlook versions. |

If required, click Map Custom Fields, then map column headers (such as Subject, To, etc.) accordingly. |
In the above method, while converting JSON to CSV, the original structure might not be retained. Apart from this, there are many other limitations, which are discussed below.
|
None of the above methods are undesirable—for a short list of tasks. It’s a genuine, free method to complete the job. But running three different workarounds, each while maintaining its own formatting, is not done manually. |
After going through the above manual methods. We came across some obvious issues. Such as, none of them is a wrong decision, but none of them is a complete method either. Each method solves one specific issue but has other drawbacks, causing none of the methods to suit precisely. This is a problematic case. Some of the shortcomings you might have noticed yourself are
That’s why it’s a smart choice to choose a dedicated tool.
It’s a window-based tool purposely built to import Google Tasks to Outlook, including Gmail mailboxes, tasks, etc., into Microsoft 365. It uses secure authentication rather than relying on stored passwords. This is a recommended tool for anyone who’s looking for “sync Google Tasks to Outlook.” Compared to the manual method, this is easier to follow. It handles data in the same match-mapped workflow instead of individual exporting.
